How to Use This Tool
One of the biggest challenges our web clients face is thinking about their information architecture. How many assets do you have for your website? How many pages do you need to build? What content goes where?
Using the checklist and template below, follow our process for auditing and organizing your content. From there, you can either hand off these lists to your web developer (like us!) or use them to guide your DIY website build.

- [ ] Content audit
- [ ] Create a list of all the content your organization already has: text, video, photos, etc. — see the attached template
- [ ] Ensure all content on your list is up to date and has all the necessary information
- [ ] Review and update text content
- [ ] Ensure photos and videos are representative of your work and have the necessary media credits
- [ ] Create categories and buckets
- [ ] Brainstorm the top-level categories or "buckets" of content you will organize your assets into — for websites, these categories often become the main navigation links
- [ ] Assign each piece of content a category for it to belong to. Note that content can belong to more than one category, but the most straightforward and easy to navigate sites have as little overlap as possible
- [ ] Review your content list and categories — iterate through this process creating and removing categories until you're happy with the list
- [ ] Create your media library
- [ ] Return to your list of photo, video, and audio content and brainstorm the different ways you'd like people to be able to filter and view this content. Examples include searching by date, performer or photographer, theme, project, etc.
- [ ] Create a list of the types of filters you have created
- [ ] On the list of media content, add the necessary dates, themes, and other filter information that corresponds to each item
